Actors on Kyunki.. ending and what next - A brief recap of the longest running soap on Indian television

.

A brief recap of the longest running soap on Indian television
:
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi started airing on October 3, 2000 and ran for eight years. The serial had over 70 characters spanning over five generations. In the last eight years, the saas-bahu saga, which completed 1834 episodes has won more than 78 awards in various categories.

The serial also had its share of controversies when it showed Tulsi pulling the plug off Savita’s lifeline in the hospital. It raised issues of mercy killing and an episode which showed a pregnant Nandini undergoing sex-determination test, which had the women organisations up in arms. Mandira Bedi, who played the vamp, was killed off only to be brought back in the form of Achint Kaur. Smriti’s exit from the serial created a big brouhaha. Eventually she came back, but in the interim period, Gautami Gadgil played Tulsi.

The serial saw three actors playing her husband, Mihir, starting with Amarr Upadhyay who was killed off few days after they were married. His death didn’t go down well with the viewers and he was brought back. But a generation leap had Amarr quitting because he didn’t want to play a old character. In came Inder Kumar as Mihir. He didn’t stay for long and was replaced by Ronit Roy. The serial ended on a sour note between the channel Star Plus and Balaji Telefilms. When star sent a termination notice to Balaji on grounds of low TRPs, the latter took the channel to court. Star, however won the case and the serial was taken off air on November 6, 2008.

Actors on Kyunki.. ending and what next
Ronit Roy: I am very upset because I was attached to the show. I have been a part of it for a long time. But I guess all good things have to come to an end and make way for a new beginning. It is something I am yet to deal with.

As of now, there is nothing new on the cards. I am still talking to people and reading scripts. However, I am not too keen on taking up a daily soap. There are couple of film scripts and a reality show that I am looking at. I have already shot for my brother Rohit’s film Blockbuster that is based on the film industry.

Hiten Tejwani: It should have ended gracefully, but it ended abruptly. I will miss shooting for Kyunki... But I have other serials like Mahabharat, so I will be busy with that.

Riva Bubber: It was a bit of a rude shock as the end came abruptly. I was working in the serial for the last five-and-a-half years and the set was like a home away from home. I thought the serial would go on forever. It’s really sad the way it ended.

Alot of other shows that have been axed come to know of it at least a couple of months in advance but in our case we heard of it on October 20 and the last day of the shoot was November 2. That was very fast. As of now, I taking a break. This is the first time I am taking off after shooting every single day. But I am a little anxious about not knowing what’s happening next. I read that Ekta is concerned about the employees of the serial and I am sure if there’s anything for us she will call.

www.webnsn.com

Tasneem Sheikh: I feel sad that Kyunki... has got over. I was /part of it for five years and it was like another family, with whom I am shared happy and sad moments. I have yet to come to terms with the fact that it’s over. Now that it has ended, I will be rejoining Kis Des Mein Hai Mera Dil as Daljeet. I am not taking up any other work.

Sumeet Sachdev: It’s ironical that the last day of Kyunki’s telecast aired was the first day I took out the DVD print of a short film that I have made. It is a 43-minute film that I plan to take to festivals. Kyunki... had become a part of my life and was I habituated to shooting for it a major portion of the month. Thinking positvely I will go a step ahead.

Reshmi Ghosh: I definitely feel nostalgic about the show. I have been in it for the last one-and-a-half years and the serial has given me huge recognition. I thought Kyunki... will go on for atleast 10 years. It is like going away from your family. But I guess someday it had to end. I am doing Nach Baliye, right now and looking at films as well as modelling.

Mouni Roy: My track wasn’t on for the last two months, nevertheless I was emotionally attached to Kyunki... and to director Gary Bhindre who passed away. It was my first serial and I expected it to run for 10 years. However, it has to end sometime and something new has to start.

No offers for actors turned producers

.

/photo.cms?msid=3698396Aroona Irani: Des Mein Nikalla Hoga Chand, Mehendi Tere Naam Ki etc, Aroona’s career as a producer took off in full swing. “I’d taken a small break from acting because I wanted to launch my production house. Back then, I was also making films.”

Aroona had no time to act and had to turn down acting assignments. “But now when I’m back no one wants to offer me any work.” She thinks that most director-producers feel that senior actors like her will be uncomfortable taking instructions from them. Being an all rounder always doesn’t work.

/photo.cms?msid=3698356 Rakhi Vijan: Post Hum Paanch , Rakhi Vijan turned a full time producer with Heena . “I was

concentrating more on my production house.” But that was then. Today, Rakhi desperately wants to make a comeback. She was last seen in a blink and miss role in Golmaal Returns . The word has it that she has been sending feelers to good friend-turned foe Ekta Kapoor to cast her in one of her upcoming shows. “Making a comeback is my priority,” she states.

/photo.cms?msid=3698363 Dheeraj Kumar: The most popular supporting hero of the 70’s Dheeraj Kumar has acted in hit films and TV shows. Apparently, the man lost touch with being in front of the camera after he turned a producer.

His company Creative Eye has many hit shows like Betiyaan and Mykaa. In his quest to launch his company Kumar disappeared from the acting scene completely. Does he miss being in front of the camera? “Not really,” he says.

/photo.cms?msid=3698365 Deepti Bhatnagar: From being a sex symbol on the silver screen, to producing and hosting travel shows like Musafir Hoon Yaroon on Star Plus, she has come a long way.

Deepti who is a successful producer and has consciously been making different shows on TV like Mohe Rang De , is also a hands on mother. “But acting is something that I’ve seriously not pursued,” she confesses. The lady assures that she is enjoying her stint as a creative producer.

Television Bond Girl : Shama Sikander

Shama Sikander who was recently seen in the dance reality show Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena, has met with an accident. A truck hit her car when she was returning from the premiere of the new Bond movie 'Quantum of Solace'.

Describing the incident Shama says, “I was returning from the premiere of 'Quantum of Solace' late in the night when this huge Tata truck in front of my Scorpio suddenly took a sharp turn and banged my car. I was a bit shaken up when it happened, I got out of my car and managed to stop the truck driver from fleeing. I almost fought with him on the road. I didn't let him budge from the spot.”

Later, the cops turned up and Shama took the driver to a Police Station in Goregaon and filed a TAD (Traffic Accident Data) complaint. This was also for the first time in her life that Shama actually entered a Police Station. "I had only seen them in movies, but I realised a real Police Station looks quite different," she quips.

"On hindsight, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I am myself surprised at my guts. I still can’t believe that I actually got out on the road to face the truck driver. I was even about to hit that guy for his negligence when the cops landed on the spot. Since I'd just seen the James Bond movie, it seems I was in a full-on Bond mood while everyone was staring at our fight on the road."

So is Shama trying to be the desi Bond girl?

Poeple re-actions of Repeat telecasts

Every couch potato's worst fears have come true. From today, you won't get to see any fresh episodes of your favourite soaps and reality shows. The broadcasters (Hindi GECS) have blacked out all fresh programming after the workers union and TV producers failed to solve their differences. Beginning last night all soaps have repeat telecasts. Some channels are going to beam soaps from the past to keep the viewer interest alive but will it bear fruit?

Webnsn.com spoke to a few TV viewers as to how they will go about their viewing habits from today.

Mala Bahadur (housewife):

Favourite shows Balika Vadhu, Maayka, Indian Idol

It's a grim scenario for us viewers. We can watch the repeats for a while but not too long. After a while, you will get bored of seeing the same stuff. Thus, I hope whatever the problem is it's resolved quickly. I'm not a big fan of Bigg Boss so I'm likely to snub it. That leaves me with nothing to watch.

Vinay Kumar (housewife):

Favourite shows – Balika Vadhu, Main Teri Parchhain Hoon, Jeevan Saathi, Bandhan, Ramayan, Comedy Circu

I still don't know what the problem is but my son told me from today I won't get to see any fresh episodes. I'm a huge fan of Colors and have been watching three of their shows. I find Bigg Boss very vulgar so I'll be left with no option but to watch the repeat telecasts. However, when I'm bored of them, I've asked my son to show me some Hindi movies.

Urmil Bararia (Housewife):

Favourite shows – Saat Phere, Kasamh Se, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Balika Vadhu

I'm a couch potato to the core but this period is more of a breather for me. After watching these shows day in and day out, you get addicted to them. Thus, I am going to enjoy this break. There's no way that I'm going to watch the repeat telecast or that crass Bigg Boss. From hereon, I can bide time for other activities, in particularly writing.

Shikhi Jain (Business Technology Analyst):

Favourite shows – Nach Baliye

I'm not at all a soap lover. So, I'm least likely to be affected by this black out. Whether they are fresh or old episodes, these soaps are all the same and predictable. So, if you've seen an Ekta soap of the past, the same is repeated in existing shows.

The only thing that I watch on Hindi GECs is Nach Baliye. I don't think I'll have any reservation watching repeat telecasts. When you love dancing, it doesn't matter whether it's an old episode, you will always love watching it. Apart from Nach Baliye, I'll continue watching cartoons and channels such as Discovery.

Gaurav, (a media research analyst):

Anti-television and thus has no favourite shows.

People will find alternate sources of entertainment, and there will be a break from kitchen politics and all rona-dhona (crying). Besides, the couch potatoes will have time do something more productive. For a change other members of the family will also have their chance to hold that TV remote.

Sudha Patre (housewife):

Favourite shows – Bidaai, Indian Idol, Balika Vadhu, Indian Idol, Bigg Boss

My children have their exams so the TV is switched off most of the time. So I'm not likely to miss much as it will all be only old episodes on air. I'm not going to watch any old episodes. I will continue to watch Bigg Boss. Apart from that, I'll watch news and music channels. The one good thing about this period is that all family members can sit together and watch a particular program. Even though I'm not too fond of cricket, I like watching it with the family. I remember during IPL, we used to watch the matches together. If there's any cricket coming up in the next fortnight then, we will watch it.

Confirming the news, Rajesh says, “Yes, I have been offered this show. However, nothing is finalised yet. It will take about a week’s time before things fall in place. Currently, I’m having a problem with dates. However, I’m keen to be part of this project.

Commenting on the other star cast, a source says. “In all likelihood, Dhruv Singh, who played Om Prakash in Bindass’ Sun Yaar Chill Maar, will play the ghost. The actors who are finalised are Kiku Sharda and Manju Sharma.”

Aman Verma is losing it

Some actors just don’t want to improve their image. We thought Aman would get into the damage control mode and try and launder his old image. But the actor doesn’t seem to learn. The webnsn.com from the sets of Sujata in which he plays the lead is that the actor is making life difficult for all on the sets.

If sources are to be believed, Aman reports late for shoots causing inconvenience to the other actors and throws tantrums at the drop of a hat. Members from the cast and crew have repeatedly found it difficult to deal with him due to his behavior. In fact, the protagonist Indrani Haldar and Aman are not on talking terms.

Dear Aman, at this rate you may soon be left with no work and hence no place to throw your weight.

No time for love - Surilie (Meet Mila De Rabba)

Surilie, the protagonist of Meet Mila De Rabba on Sony, is the latest entrant in Tellyworld. The seventeen year old chirpy girl from Chandigarh is making her acting debut with this show.

Surilie belongs to a family that is a part of the television industry. Her father holds an important post in Zee Punjabi and her sister Yami is an actress who started her career as a lead in Rajkumar Aryan. But Surilie is determined to create her own identity and make it big in the world of television.

Take a peek into the life of the beautiful and bubbly Surilie, exclusively on Webnsn.com.

How did you bag this role?

Auditions for this show were being held in Chandigarh. I went for this audition along with my gang of friends. All of us gave it a try but for a lark. I was not at all serious about it. I was shocked when I got a call from the production house saying that I was selected for the lead role. Yet I had to go through a long procedure of giving a number of screen tests before being finalised.

But didn’t you worry about your Board exams?

This was too big an opportunity to let go. The channel is big, the producers are good, and the concept and story line is wonderful. The story of this serial is not like that of those regular ones. It is a different and a big show.

As far as studies are concerned, I want to balance both and I will have to do so. This is a challenge that I have taken up against myself. My board exams are in the month of March. I will be going to Chandigarh to appear for it then. I am focused on doing well in my acting career as well as my studies. I am planning to study law after my twelfth exams.

Did your parents support this decision?

Yes, in fact, they are the ones who encouraged me to take up this show and come to Mumbai. They had faith in me. I am too young to go against their decision and take such a big step.

Does your sister Yami Gautami who is also an actress, gives you tips on acting?

Of course she does. She is my biggest inspiration. She is my guide, my mentor, everything. She always helps me out be it in my studies or my acting career. I am really fortunate that I have an elder sister in the same profession to guide me and to stay together with in this big city.

Did you have an ambition to become an actress?

I basically wanted to become a lawyer but acting was also on my mind. I never thought that I will get into acting so early in my life. Studies were my focus. Acting at this point of time was unexpected and I am simply going in the direction that life is taking me.

Has there been any change in your life from the time you bagged this role?

My life has completely changed. Earlier, my life was very chilled out but now I have goals to achieve. I am taking my career very seriously as I want to give my best to the show. I have the pressure to prove myself. There are times when I feel like going back to my class room, meeting my teachers and hanging out with my friends but I can’t do that anymore. I really miss my family and even they are missing me. At the same time I am happy to have got such a big opportunity of playing a lead in Meet Mila De

Do you have any one special in your life?

No as I want to focus on my career. With my studies and acting in Meet Mila…., I have no time for love.

How was it acting with experienced and talented actors like Raza Murad, Rajeshwari Sachdev?

I was very nervous on the first day of shoot, especially looking at them. But the minute I started working with them, I felt comfortable as they are so co-operative, helpful and down- to- earth. In spite of being so talented and senior, they are humble.

How has the journey been so far?

It has been very exciting. Every day is a learning experience to me.

Now that there is a strike going on how are you spending your free time?

I am utilising this time to work on my grooming. I am taking care of my beauty and fitness. I am also working towards improving my acting skills.

Ali and Sara enjoying time off in Bhopal

.

What could be more delightful for a TV actor than getting a day off from the shoot? With shootings of almost all the shows coming to a halt, TV actors are making the most of it. One such couple which seems to be inseparable is Ali Merchant and Sara Khan. Ali has gone with Sara to visit her parents in Bhopal.

Ali who currently essays the lead actor in Rubi says, “Since the shooting of almost all the shows have come to a halt, Sara and I have some time to spare for ourselves. She wanted to visit her family along with me so here we are in Bhopal. Its fun being with her family and I am very close her two maternal uncles.”

“It is a bit cold here which marks the beginning of winter and due to which I am down with cold but I am enjoying every bit of it. Infact the other day we were mobbed when we had gone for boating and as a result of which we had to call for security personnel. We are also indulging in some shopping. I am returning tomorrow and Sara will be returning on Monday,” informs the actor.

With Ali meeting the Sara’s family we wonder if marriage is on the cards!

Kunal Kapoor entering Sony’s Meet Mila De Rabba

He is all set to shed his chocolate boy image and essay a grey shade in Sony's Meet Mila De Rabba...

The cute boy next door of Left Right Left, Kunal Kapoor is all set to essay a different role on television. He is soon going to enter in Sony’s Meet Mila De Rabba where he will be portraying the role of a villain.
A source close to Kunal says, “He is going to portray a role which is partially negative. Nothing much has been contemplated as the shooting is yet to start.”

Kunal waited for 10 months to get what he expected. “He did not want to play the same guy next door and thus when this offer came, he just grabbed it with both hands. He likes to play the roles that are close to reality,” adds the source.

“Every one as human has all three shades, but on TV normally it’s portrayed either positive or negative. Here Kunal is balancing between the two and is very excited to start shoot,” quips the source.

The shooting has been put to halt due to the on-going strike of Broadcasters.

We called up Kunal to know more details, but he refused to comment.

Mugdha Chapekar looking at some very strong female oriented roles

Mugdha Chapekar has moved on after the ending of NDTV Imagine's Dharam Veer and now plans to take up woman oriented roles on television..

Mugdha Chapekar who plays Shera in NDTV Imagine's Dharam Veer is finally back in Mumbai with the show ending. “I had settled in Sagar city ( Baroda) for the past two years.. So I am just chilling now, eating and enjoying a well deserved break”, says Mugdha. She refuses to comment on her fantasy costume drama ending. “I am just an actor, hence cannot say anything else except that, what happened was for the good”, states the actress.

Mugdha is quite happy to have played two completely different characters during her Baroda stay, as the first cute princess Sanyogita in Star Plus’ Prithviraj Chauhan, and now the dacoit with a golden heart in Dharam Veer.

She is now looking at some very strong female oriented characters. “I might even do a saas-bahu if the script is right. Although both my shows were male dominated, I did get a lot of screen space and stuff to do”, quips she. Mugdha also wants to try her hand at cinema. “But I want to be known as an actress rather than a star. I will never wear revealing clothes or do bold scenes”, conveys the actress.

Mugdha who has been acting since the age of five, also refuses to comment on the alleged rudeness of co-star Rajat Tokas on set. “All I will say is that we are good professionals who enjoy good on-screen chemistry”.

Ask her about the big age difference between Rajat and her, and this English Literature graduate gets defensive. “You are making me look too old; the difference in our ages might not be more than 4 years. And anyways when I play the character, I am totally into it and never see myself as Mugdha”, concludes the actress.

On the sets of SAB's Jugni Chali Jalandar

Veteran actor of Bollywood, Ranjit gives the much needed acting tips to co-stars on the sets of the SAB show..Acting classes on the sets of 'Jugni Chali Jalandhar'

On the sets of SAB's Jugni Chali Jalandar, actors take acting classes from the Bollywood veteran actor Ranjit. He passes on tips to his co-stars on improvising their acting skills.

"Yes we all do sit together during breaks and sometimes post lunch too. These new kids get very nervous during their shot, so I try to ease them with some simple tips and also give them a cold glass of lassi to relax their mind,” says Ranjit.

He says they are well trained and doesn’t need much on acting skills. “Today’s actors are very professional and you don’t need to train them much. All the kids on the show are really nice and they respect me a lot,” he adds further.

Actress Muskaan Mehani(Jugni) says "Ranjit ji’s tips have definitely helped me perform better and I consciously try not to have any retakes. He encourages all of us and I enjoy working with him as you learn so many things from him."

So it’s time for some pathshala for these actors on the sets.
