Mouni Roy, Naman Shaw and Sayantani Ghosh win "Tyohaar Dhamaaka"
We are soon going to be a nation of only singers and dancers, for 9x has unleashed yet another dance reality show, Tyohaar Dhamaaka, on the hapless viewers.
The show, as the name suggests, is about celebrating the different festivals and dance forms, wearing blinding colour-coordinated outfits, snazzy jewellery and dancing to old-and-new Bollywood numbers. The participants are the same nine and a half-faces that you see on every reality show- read Narayani Shastri and boyfriend Gaurav Chopra (thankfully in different teams), Mouni Roy, Jay Bhanushali and Twinkle Bajpai all of whom have split over from the channel’s earlierTicket To Bollywood show, Sayantani Ghosh, who after participating in an assortment of reality shows has come to this one and others.
The host is Sudha Chandran who seems to have a make-up artist who doesn’t like her. For whoever it is, the lovely Chandran is made tolook garish in loud saris and louder make up, not to forget a funny accent.
Ok, about the show, incase you are still interested. Four teams - West Ke Best, Purab Ke Suraj, Centre Ke Sikander and Uttar Ke Puttar - comprising three dancers, a combination of one boy two girls or two boys and a girl dance on songs set to a particular theme - like patriotic songs, festival songs, classical songs etc. while the judge, veteran actress Asha Parekh decides to either chhodo them or maaro them. If she chhodos them, it means they get more marks and if she maaros them, it means they get less marks (now how creative is that).
So far, we don’t know what the prize money is though we do know a bank is sponsoring the show, so may be the winners will get a concession on EMIs or interest-free loans!
What we do like is at least we will get to see the colour and glory of some festivals and a chance to listen to some old but evergreen Bollywood numbers like Jai jai shivshankar or the Daiyya re daiyya bichhua song…We also like the gracious presence of Parekh. Though she’s overdressed, her comments are precise and she gives it all with a ready, pleasant smile. However, most contestants look tired having danced in so many reality shows and having had to put up with all kinds of judges that they look a tad lost when she’s praising them or criticising them. Déjà vu!
Thankfully there are no eliminations, so no ‘angry’ walkouts and ‘crying’ binges. Tyohaar Dhamaaka : Monday - Thursday, 8:30 pm, 9X
Verdict/ Rating: 2 Stars out of 5
Bearable if you still haven’t had your fill of dance shows. For the golden oldies, the presence of Asha Parekh might be an incentive.
