Flop Show’s hit couple!

Savita and Jaspal Bhatti

You’ve laughed till you’ve cried. One look at them, and you can’t forget their iconic Flop Show — a first-of-its-kind comedy show on Indian

television.

Sitting and enjoying their meal at a city restaurant, the couple spoke about the world of comedy, their school and their recent dance reality show in which they are still going strong and are famously known as the ‘youngest couple’! Or so, feels judge Farah Khan.

So, how has the experience of the dance reality show been? “It’s been wonderful. We were a little apprehensive in the beginning as a dance going wrong can cause a lot of embarrassment. It’s a basic human instinct to do well and we got a really positive feedback about the whole thing,” says Savita. Does Jaspal share the same sentiments? “Not really. I have never danced before in my life. It was a huge challenge and I was scared. But, looking back it’s been wonderful. It’s been hectic, but amazing. And I think more than anything, we were able to earn a lot of respect from everyone on the show,” says he.

What’s the choreographer, Rocky Poonawalla’s take on them? “Ma’am is a good dancer and can pull off any style with ease. Her hip hop is fabulous. For sir, it was tough. But, they both are so open to learning new things. What works for them is their simplicity and their straight-forwardness. When we did the waltz, it was really well co-ordinated and their body language was also really nice,” asserts he. Savita further adds, “Jaspalji has a knee problem, but we never let it show or acknowledge it in the show. Since we have taken part in the competition we better follow the rules,” says she matter-of-factly.

What about their school? What does that deal with? “Our school is all about media and digital arts. It’s a school for everything which deals with media, and it’s one of the first in the North,” says Jaspal, while Savita adds, “It’s sad that even though most of the people in the entertainment industry are Punjabis, there is no school in the North to deal with media and acting. We are changing the mindset of people and creating awareness. More than acting, the stress is on technical education.”

What about the comedy shows on various channels nowdays? “Where is meaningful comedy today? The depth is missing. Can you believe it we just did ten episodes of Flop Show and it became so popular? You should know where to stop. I was a cartoonist before getting into television, so I knew the basics of making the common man laugh. It is very important for a person to laugh at himself rather than crack jokes at others which is what happens today” says Jaspal. “We are working on a comedy film now. Our audience is our strength. The script is ready and the cast is being looked at. We plan to start the venture in Punjabi. Let’s see how it works,” they say in unison.

Well, we are sure that when this couple is around, all we can see is a laugh riot!
