A mixture of all religions - Pooja Bedi

.
/photo.cms?msid=3811703 Actress and anchor Pooja Bedi is proud that she can boast of a family tree that is an amalgamation of several religions.

"I have a family which is a mix of all religions, so I worship all gods and follow all religions," says Pooja.

Though Pooja is widely known as a Sikh girl as the daughter of actor Kabir Bedi, her grandmother was a Christian who took to Buddhism, her mother Protima Bedi was a Hindu, while she was married to a Muslim.

However, the initial influence in her life was her grandfather Baba Phyare Lal Bedi, father of Kabir Bedi. "My grandfather was a direct descendent of Guru Nanak, which my father also carried forth," said Pooja.

Baba Phyare Lal was a philosopher and an author who married a British woman, Frida Houlston, while studying at Oxford University, Pooja said of her grandfather. On returning from London, he participated in the freedom struggle and Frida supported him, she added.

"It was an unusual thing that a Briton was fighting against the British; but my grandmother did it," Pooja said. Frida later converted to Buddhism and was ordained by the 16th Karmapa.

"I was given the name Karma Sarwawati by the Karmapa. So Buddhism also had a great impact in our life," said the actress, who is best remembered for her role in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander .

Pooja was introduced to Hinduism by her danseuse mother Protima, who was the daughter of a businessman from Haryana, Laxmichand Gupta, and his Bengali wife Reba.

"I was influenced by my mother to a great extent and I came to know about Hindu mythology from her. I learnt about the 'Ramayana', the 'Bhagvad Gita' and many other Hindu scriptures because of her."

Model-turned Odissi dancer Protima, who set up dance institute 'Nrityagram' on the outskirts of Bangalore, disappeared after a landslide near Pithoragarh in the Himalayas in 1998.

Pooja also took on the name Noor Jehan when she married businessman Farhan Ebrahim in 1995. Farhan's father is a Muslim and mother a Parsi. Though Pooja and Farhan split in 2002, they have two children - daughter Aalia and son Omar.

"Now my children also don't have a particular religion as I also didn't have. The only difference is that now they have Muslim and Parsi also in their blood. So they may be called Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, Sikh, Christian and Parsi!" said Pooja.

"We don't have a single god, but have all the gods together. The only thing we say to god every day is thank you, god, for everything you have given," she said.

The Crusader - Kiran Bedi

Kiran Bedi is India’s first and highest ranking woman officer who joined the Indian Police Service in 1972 and took voluntary retirement in the year 2007. She has also been a National and an Asian Tennis champion. She always had the desire of helping the people in need and in an attempt to do the same she has founded two NGOs, Navjyoti and India Vision Foundation, which reaches out to over 10,000 beneficiaries daily, in the areas of drug abuse treatment, schooling for children of prisoners, in addition to education, training, counselling, and health care to the urban and rural poor.

She is the recipient of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award (also called the Asian Nobel Prize). In keeping with her true spirit Bedi is hosting Aap Ki Kachehri, the first of its kind show where she helps the affected parties with out- of- court settlements.

Webnsn.com caught up with the gutsy lady who spoke on why she agreed to do the show, her childhood, her inspiration and lots more.

Excerpts:

What propelled you to do the show?

The concept. No other concept would have driven me like this. The spirit of the concept comes so naturally to me because that’s been the spirit of my work. This show is the continuity of the spirit of my work. Ofcourse, I needed a lot of training by the producer of the show Siddharth Basu for the fine tuning.

Were there any apprehensions doing the show?

I can’t remember lines and scripts and fortunately there are no lines to be remembered in the show. If it required me to learn all those lines I would have never done it. Aap Ki Kachehri has no scripts for anybody. I think that is one reason why the show looks natural as everything is real and that is why people relate to the show.

Can you discuss one case that you found most difficult to adjudicate?

It’s never been difficult. Because the resistance itself is a resolution to me as with that atleast you have clarity. To me everything is a resolution as whatever they want atleast they convinced everyone why they want it. You succeed once you overcome and solve the confusion and I think that’s what is emerging on the show. The only problem arises when you have one party consenting and the other resisting. All said and done we don’t force the reconciliation and remedies to the parties.

Would you agree that a big name like Kiran Bedi has helped the show and the expectations have gone up?

So that makes me more nervous. I would like to believe what you said. But yes in such a case the perception of trust is important therefore the responsibility on us to live upto that trust.

Why did you want to join the police force?

Policing for me was power to change. I believed in using this power to change and do the right thing. According to me policing can be defined as the state power to change the things and make others also do right. I didn’t know the pay package and the criteria regarding the promotions but I just knew that I could make people work towards collective growth.

What has been the turning point in your life?

Oh! I think AKK may turn out to be another turning point in my life. It is emerging by itself and each episode propels you further to do something different.

You have inspired many. Who has been your inspiration?

My home and the love of my parents was my inspiration. I have a beautiful home where my mother and father were real pillars of inspiration. We are four sisters and when we were younger we were all playing tennis and everybody bagging trophies. Mine was a very inspiring, caring, loving and a close knit family. There was no dependence on anything else but the home. Ours was a very simple home which was very happy with its simplicity. Whatever we had used to satiate us and we never craved for more. I wanted to achieve, win a match and take a trophy for my parents. For me that was the beginning and the end and it still remains the same. I didn’t have to look beyond my family for any inspiration. My idol remains to be the dedication and love of my parents. My mother is gone and my father is 90 now and we live together.

Tell us about your sisters?

My sisters have all spread out across the globe and I am the only Indian. One is a British; the other one is an American and the third one is a Canadian. They all come back for Diwali and they love being at my home as they think that my home is our mother’s home.

How were you as a child?

Oh! As a child I was always on the road playing tennis or jogging or exercising. I was always involved in outdoor activities. It didn’t bother me whether it would rain or shine or I would get tanned. I cut my hair short because of the need for tennis.

What do you think of the youth today?

Youth is so demanding now. Youth of today is very knowledgeable, probing, inquisitive and driving.

How can we combat terror?

I think one word – ‘Work Together’. It means whatever you have is scattered so one has to start putting it together as a team and practice together. Once you are ready for responses with resources flowing in you are ready to face anything. Start working together from today and tomorrow you will have better guns, better law, better bullet proof jackets and boats and then isolate the office that’s not working according to the set guidelines and in that process the media will have to play its part. But for that to happen we will have to work together from today.

Top 3 finalists of Voice of India 2

After a five month fierce battle for the coveted title of VOI, the show has reached its final stage and has got its three finalists. This week viewers will witness the elimination of Mallar Karmakar.

According to a source present on the sets, “Mallar was eliminated from the show as a result of the lack of votes for him. It is to be remembered that Mallar was re-called to the show as the wild card entry along with Zakir and Vipul Mehta at the judges’ insistence. This time round Mallar, Ravi Shukla and Saptaparna Chakraborthy were in the danger zone and Mallar was finally evicted.”

Mallar who had impressed the judges with his talent has a medical problem. As a child he had a fall and suffered a nerve hemorrhage. After that he underwent treatment for 12 years only to discover that this ailment was incurable. Till date he suffers from nausea, dizziness and headaches. His passion towards music has kept him going. There have been times before his performance when he has suffered unbearable headaches. But his dedication helped him surmount all his physical pain. His eviction understandably upset the judges.

With Mallar’s eviction the final tussle will now be between Vipul Mehta, Ravi Shukla and Saptaparna.

Juhi & Kapil Sharma to host Chhote Miyan and Rahul Mahajan to judge

Juhi ‘Kumkum’ Parmar and stand-up comedian and the winner of the The Great Indian Laughter Challenge 3 Kapil Sharma have been signed on to host the first-of-its kind show Chhote Miyan. For the very first time in the history of Indian television viewers will get to see the comic talent of kids aged 6-14.

Talking about the show host Kapil Sharma says, “There are countless comedy shows airing across the channels. At times they are so boring that we feel that the comedians are behaving like children. So rather than watching the same old faces it’s better to watch these talented kids on such a show.”

Kapil was also seen with Chandan Prabhakar co-hosting certain segments of the TGILC 4. Juhi too has been receiving appreciation for her comic timing on Comedy Circus where she was paired with V.I.P. in the first season.

The show will be judged by Bigg Boss 2 inmate Rahul Mahajan and veteran actor Sachin Pilgaonkar.

Kashif, Shakeel all other Pakistan TV actors had left the country soon after the terror attacks

The terror attack in Mumbai has yet again strained relations between India and Pakistan thereby causing panic between its civilians. Feeling this heat are the Pakistani artistes working in India who have now decided to head home. Though reports confirm that adequate steps have been taken by the Mumbai police to ensure the safety of these artists.

Yasir Shah

Pakistan actor Yasir Shah, who has figured in shows like Khwaish and Jiya Jale, will be leaving the country in the coming weeks. “It’s very unfortunate that I had to leave this country like this. I was in talks with few producers for couple of shows but it looks unlikely that I’ll be able to take them. I’ll be leaving for Karachi in a week or two. I hope to return by March provided the tension between our the two countries eases.”

One show that is most affected with the current crisis is Sony’s Kaante Ki Takkar. The contest had come down to its final four pairs. Ali Asgar his Pakistani partner Kashif Khan, Urvashi and Pakistan’s Shakeel, representing the ‘Purans’ were to compete against ‘Sumans’ Sudesh Lahiri-Krushna Abhishek, Kamya Punjabi and Rajeev Thakur. However, Shakeel and Kashif had to leave the country in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attack.

Ali Asgar with Kashif Khan

When contacted Ali Asgar said, “Kashif and Shakeel had left the country soon after the terror attacks. We were supposed to shoot for the final episode but everything has now gone haywire. We haven’t received any information from the channel or the production regarding further shoot. We’re hoping to have Ali and Shakeel back so that the final episode can be completed.”

When contacted, Sony business head Albert Almeida said, “At the moment we can only wait and watch. Beyond this we cannot do anything. We do have a bank of episodes for Kaante Ki Takkar. We’re hoping by then the situation will normalise.”

Shakeel

Last month, tellychakkar had reported on a new show Shakeel made in China that was to follow Kaante Ki Takkar. Since there’s a question mark over Shakeel’s availability, there were concerns that the show might be scrapped. Albert though allayed any such fear. “The show was never solely about Shakeel. Plus, it was never named as Shakeel made in China. Just like the other artistes Shakeel was going to be one of the performers. That show is very much on and it’s unfortunate that our Pakistani artistes won’t be part of it.”

Laughter Knights on Star One is another show that will not be featuring any Pakistani artistes. Director Pankaj Saraswat says, “We were keen on having few Pakistani artistes. Prominent among them were going to be the legendary Umer Sharif, Rauf Lala, Ali Hassan and Irfan Malik. However, most of these artists had left home during the strike itself. Post this terror attack, we’ve decided against calling any of them.”

Zaheer Abbas

Another show that will be least affected is Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009. Zaheer Abbas was the lone Pakistani contender remaining in the competition. However, he too had to flee to Pakistan. “Zaheer had a visa of 60 days but he had to rush home this week. We would want him to return next week provided the situation eases. We didn’t want any risk to his security thus we deemed it better to send him back home,’ says our source from the sets.

Well, not all Pakistani feel safe in their homeland. Karachi’s Kashif Khan doesn’t think so. So says Kashif’s Indian partner Ali Asgar. “Kashif hails from Karachi but he himself has told me that he considers India a safer place than his hometown. He’d mentioned to me that the situation in Karachi is such that one doesn’t know whether the person next to you could be a suicide bomber.”

Going by the series of terror attacks in our country, one can assume both India and Pakistan are sailing in the same boat.

Umer Sharif cancels India visit

Pakistan’s legendary comedian Umer Sharif proposed visit to India has been scrapped in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attack. Sharif was to appear in the Star One show Laughter Knights that commences from 12 December.

Umer Sharif

Confirming this news, Laughter Knights director Pankaj Saraswat says, “We were contemplating on having Umer Sharif as a guest performer in some of the episodes of Laughter Knights. However, we had to scrap this idea in the wake of the Mumbai terror attack. Besides, we also need to take into account the prevailing public sentiment. Just when we thought that there was positive development in Indo-Pak relations, an incident like this has splashed water on all our hopes.”

Umer Sharif had earlier made an appearance as a guest judge in the grand finale of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge 3.

'I'm not as boring as I was shown in Bigg Boss' Debojit Saha

If there was an award for the most non-controversial person in the Bigg Boss House, it would have undoubtedly gone to singer-cum-show host Debojit Saha. After spending 10 weeks as an inmate in the Bigg Boss house, Debojit was ousted. In this freewheeling interview he talks about his fellow inmates in the house, his wife, his career and singing.

Debojit speaks his heart out to Webnsn.com.

People were quite surprised when you took up the offer of participating in Bigg Boss.

So was I! Actually, I had said No when I was initially offered this show and gave a couple of reasons for my refusal. Firstly I was not an actor or the type of dramatic person who would excel in a show like this and secondly my wife Bandana is carrying. I did not want to leave her alone during this time. It was only after she pushed me for the show did I agree. By then I had already had a number of meetings with the producers who were hell bent on having me in the show.

Interestingly, when I'd told the producers that I would be thrown out of the house in a matter of days, they had said that I would be there for at least 10 weeks. And I was there for exactly 10 weeks!

I had one condition which I laid down before them – I should be allowed to do riyaaz every day in the house. They agreed. Unfortunately, that is what went against me and Ehsaan nominated me because apparently my riyaaz was disturbing him.

Has the public perception of Debojit changed after Bigg Boss?

I don't know. That is something you can tell me. I can tell you this much that in reality I am not as boring as I was shown to be. No one outside the Bigg Boss house knows that I used to sing daily for all inmates. In fact, I used to have requests from everyone to sing their favourite numbers. It was nothing short of a song-on-demand programme. I even cooked daily for everyone. After I came out, I learned that unfortunately none of that was shown on television. After Bigg Boss I have become more outspoken.

The Rahul-Monica-Payal triangle on television has created ripples all over the country. You viewed it first hand in the house.

To be very frank, I found Monica to be the most mysterious inmate of the house. Payal seemed to be Rahul's girlfriend for a long time before he started flirting with Monica. I have heard that they (Rahul and Payal) used to stay together before the show started. Even in front of us they used to hug each other and do all sorts of things. Coming from a middle class background, I used to find it pretty awkward.

In fact, after Payal was evicted, Rahul used to tell Monica every now and then—Chal kapde dhone chalte hai—and then both of them would go inside the bathroom. What happened after that we don't know but I must say they (Monica and Rahul) never misbehaved in front of us. But Rahul knew how to use the cameras in the Bigg Boss house very well.

The only person who managed to fight with you in the show was Raja Chowdhury. How do you view him as a person?

I would not like to comment on this, but he is an extremely perverted person. I never wanted to have any relation with him within or outside the house. Just one example will prove what sort of a human being he is – while inside the house he used to say that he would like to stay 100 miles away from girls and within a week of his coming out he got entangled in multiple molestation cases.

Debojit with his Bigg Boss Housemates

Did you expect Ashutosh to win the show?

There are rumours floating around on Rahul Mahajan using his clout to make people vote for Ashutosh. I would not like to comment on that, but I can say this much that Ashutosh is not a person who deserved to win this contest.

Now that Bigg Boss is over, what else is happening in your life?

I have always wanted to establish my career as a singer. Nothing has changed on this front after Bigg Boss. Before I went inside the house, I had recorded the song Pardesi Girl for Dostana. After I came out, I learned that it had become a huge hit and was dubbed by Shankar Mahadevan. I felt sad but that is the way this industry operates, what can one say.

I am doing quite a few stage shows as well, including a number of foreign shows. In fact, after I came out of Bigg Boss, I have gone to Mauritius twice for shows!

Any more reality shows lined up?

Not now. I have done quite a few reality shows as participant and host. Thankfully, I have got good feedback from all judges, hosts and viewers. Right now, I would like to take it a bit easy and concentrate on stage shows, since my wife is expected to deliver in February. She needs me beside her more.
