Discovery Travel & Living is airing a 10-part series Hotel By The Bay shot in Mumbai’s Taj Mahal hotel.
It is touted to be first reality-based show on hotels. Before you jump to conclusions, it is not the usual reality show where you have a competition of the best hotels or hoteliers. Called Hotel By The Bay, the show traces the day in the life of the hotel staff. The 10-part series will cover every aspect that goes into the running of a hotel from the laundary staff, housekeeping, butler, chef to the top-level management. To be aired on Discovery Travel & Living, the series begins from October 26 and will be aired every Sunday at 8.30 pm. Says Rajesh Johri, SVP & GM - India, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, "This is a real show and focusses on real people working in a hotel."
A sneak peek of the series showed how the chefs, room service and housekeeping gear up for the visit of a particularly demanding customer as well as a dinner hosted for the Princess of Denmark. The anxiety, nervousness and the staff’s determination of the staff to deliver comes across and you see the hard work, the grit and grim that exists behind the facade of a glamorous hotel. A voiceover by Sameep Nanda takes you through the stories. The show, which has been put together in one-and-a-half years has been shot in Mumbai's Taj Mahal Hotel. "It is an international show and Taj is a reputed international hotel, which is why we decided to feature it," explains Johri.

Karambir Singh Kang, GM, Taj Mahal, Palace & Tower, Mumbai, confesses that initially they were a little sceptical about doing the show. "But when we realised it will feature what goes behind the scenes, the hard work and typical day in a hotel on a global platform we were more than willing to share our story," says Singh. The series will also talk about the heritage of the 100-year old hotel. The camera crew was stationed in the hotel for 12 weeks to shoot the key characters in real time.
The India-centric programmes aired on Travel & Living so far, include The Great Indian Wedding, Indian Rendezvous and A Matter Of Taste with Vir Sanghvi. Currently, the channel is shooting a new series, Experience Asian Lifestyles with Sanghvi. Travelling the entire expanse of Asia, including India, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Bali and Malaysia, Sanghvi will showcase the continent's lifestyles ranging from its beautiful spas and massages to grand heritage and boutique hotels to cuisines and variety of drinks. It it is scheduled to air early next year.
According to Johri, they got a good response for the India-specific shows specially the Manish Arora and Vir Sanghvi show.
As for competition from a relatively-new channel NDTV Good Times, Johri dismisses it saying, "We are different as chalk-and- cheese. Ours is a global channel and the upper-class audience from all over the world have smilar tastes which we cater to. I don't think two guys on a motorcycle going to different places and sampling food is a lifestyle show," he says referring to the Highway On My Plate show on Good Times, though he refuses to name it.
