1. Smriti Irani / Saakshi Tanwar (Actresses)
What has been the most recognised element of our television in the past five years? Well, you could knock at any door across the country and the answer will come bang on -- it's Tulsi and Parvati! The two are the small screen avatars of Smriti Irani and Saakshi Tanwar, respectively, and together, they have held a nation in trance for the last seven years. Television TOP TEN
Even today, when Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki (wherein they have donned the garb of these two iconic characters), are well past their glory, the twosome remain the focal point of kitchen-prattle all across. TOP Indian Reality Shows
Saakshi's Parvati has always played a second fiddle to Smriti's Tulsi on the popularity charts. If that has rankled Saakshi, she doesn't show it. In fact, they anchored a show together recently and the chemistry between them was far from being forced or put on! Hot Film News
2. Mandira Bedi (Actress, cricket commentator and anchor)
While Mandira Bedi started out as an actress, and a talented one at that (remember Shanti?), she reinvented herself by donning the cap of a television presenter during the Cricket World Cup in 2003. Cricket Update
Gracefully rising above criticisms of cricketing knowledge and dressing, Mandira did what few men in the country have been able to achieve -- pull women to view cricket. Soon, the very detractors had to raise their hands in applause, while her noodle straps and designer saris found many takers. Even now, she remains one of the most stunning, stylish and versatile anchor in the country. Bigg Boss 2 Updates
3. Shobha Kapoor / Ekta Kapoor (Producers)
They are the Maharanis of mush and if you thought that is no big deal, think again. Ask that housewife in the kitchen and she will tell you how big the deal really is. Despite all the flak they have received from the high-brows for the kind of content they are making, this mother and daughter duo has created a body of work that has become the toast of middle class households across the county. http://televisionduniya.blogspot.com/2008/07/review-kahani-hamare-mahabharat-ki.html
Starting with Hum Paanch (before the K-fixation engulfed them), they have gone on to make Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and Kasauti Zindagi Ki -- the trinity of soaps that have redefined popularity on the box. It has been curtains for Kasauti... but the other two have entered the eighth year of their running -- albeit with their sweep and sway not being quite the same as before and big dents appearing in their viewership.
But it hardly matters. The three have catapulted Kapoors' Balaji Telefilms to numero uno position in the TV-production sector today. LIVE Sensex - World Market
4. JD Majethia / Aatish Kapadia (Producer- Director-Writer duo)
They are as different as aaloo and Pyaaz and they make as delicious a combo as the two. JD, open, animated and exuberant, is a perfect foil to the bottled up, brutally honest and brash (when he chooses to be) Aatish. In their production-house, Hats-off, while JD is all commerce, Aatish is all content and this way, they have been lethal as a team and dished out sterling fare on television. Fame Gurukul
Regaling the audience with the over-the-top, but hugely funny Khichdi, they went onto make what is perhaps the most sophisticated comedy ever on Indian Television -- Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai. But their piece-de-resistance has been Ba Bahu Aur Baby in which they have created comedy beaded with the pearls of pain like never before. There have also been other shows of great substance from them like Ek Packet Umeed , Jassu Ben...
5. Gajendra Singh (Producer-Director)
When you talk abut the shapers of TV spectrum in India, you cannot turn a blind eye to Gajendra Singh. He, all by himself, created a whole new genre that of the talent-hunt shows.
When Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, his brain-child, took its first tentative steps, many had thumbed their noses at it. But Sa Re... grew on the viewers and soon enough became compulsive viewing in households across the country. The nose-thumbers had to eat crow and Sa Re... went on to see more than 10 years of uninterrupted telecast -- a Herculean achievement by all counts.
Kaun Banega Crorepati - Star Plus Prsented
Not only this, Sa Re... really could hunt some truly exceptional talent. It gave to the world of playback singing, a string of pearls from Shreya Ghoshal to Kunal Ganjawala to Sunidhi Chauhan. But for Gajendra and his show, these gifted ones may have vanished in thin air.
6. Ronnie Screwvala/ Zarina Mehta (Co-founders of UTV)
UTV may have started out as a small production house, but Ronnie and Zarina's foresight has seen it grow to dizzying heights in television and more recently, films. While Ronnie, the founder CEO of UTV group, is more involved in the films segment, his wife Zarina, the executive director of Bindass, is in charge of UTV's youth broadcasting agenda.
If you spare a thought and remember all those pathbreaking shows from the last couple of years, you'll find a UTV connect in most, then be it Snakes and Ladders, Hip Hip Hurray, Shakalaka Boom Boom, The Mathematic Show, Shanti, Parivartan, Saaya, and others.
Interestingly, Zarina was earlier also the COO of Hungama TV, which became India's No 1 kids channel in 20 months under her leadership, and played a crucial role in the launch and creative control of Astro Ceria, the first Local Kids Channel in Indonesia and Malaysia. 7. Prem Sagar, Moti Sagar, Anand Sagar (Producer-Director trio)
If you want to see what pedigree is all about -- just snatch a glimpse of the three Sagars who are helming the Sagar Arts today. That's the second and third generation in harness, following Ramanand Sagar, the original patriarch who went on to make an empire called Sagar Arts.
More often than not, things do not work this way in the show-world and legacies are wantonly squandered by generations that follow a giant. But the current Sagars are a blazing exception to that. They have not only held onto the legacy but, in fact, have expanded it to farther horizons. http://televisionduniya.blogspot.com/2008/07/star-cast-of-kahaani-hamaaray.html
That's more than evident in their reinventing of Ramayan on NDTV Imagine, which is crisper and technically better mounted than the previous one by the senior Sagar. But they remain a picture of humility and stubbornly refuse to take any credit for themselves
8. Siddharth Basu, Founder, Synergy Communications.
Widely regarded as the father of television quiz shows in India, Siddharth Basu has a hand in making the Indian television industry, really big. For he's the man behind Synergy Communications, behind Kaun Banega Crorepati, and behind Amitabh Bachchan's reinvention.
He also has to his credit Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa, Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain, as well as 10 Ka Dum, making him one of the truly biggest producers of Indian television.
9. Ronit Roy (Actor)
Remember a film called Jaan Tere Naam? Well, you may not, and we don't blame you for it because it sank without a trace, and with it sank its debut making lead actor, too -- a certain someone called Ronit Roy. TOP Indian Television Anchors .
This sinking saga went on recurring with alarming regularity, till the doors of tinsel town were all but closed on him. They say television is the last refuge of an actor and predictably Ronit changed gears and made a detour to it. The rest is history!
On the canvas of Ronit, the actor, cropped up Mihir and Mr Bajaj and took his life to another level. Ronit Roy in these two characters became the TV-icon of the country. Reportedly the highest paid TV-star today, he has, by dint of sheer determination, proved that in his case, what was films' loss has been TV's gain. Currently, he is donning the colossal character of Bheeshm Pitaamah in Balaji's Kahaani Hamaare Mahabharat Ki. And thus, the scales of fortune keep on tilting to his side...! 10A.Cyrus Broacha (Video jockey and anchor)
As one of India's most loved multi-faceted personality, Cyrus has been a theatre artiste, an actor, a radio jockey, a video jockey, an anchor, and even a dancer (Remember Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa?) India's TOP corrupt states
Mad, madder, maddest -- That's Cyrus Broacha for you. If you haven't seen him in the act, you haven't seen anything. For humour can't get better than him, and he has the rare ability to make stand-up comedians and laughter challenge participants look like amateurs in front of him. But then, that is him -- witty, intelligent and spontaneous (just catch an episode of MTV Bakra or The Week That Wasn't -- the news satire show which he anchors and co-writes!). His success formula -- The ability to laugh at himself.
10B. Anu and Shashi Ranjan (Editor & Publisher, GR8! TV, President and Convenor, ITA)
They are totally in-sync with each other in all they seek to pursue. Coming together by the accident of marriage, they have gone on to become a winsome twosome. They could read the tarot card of television long before the others and foresee its enormous potential as being the future of entertainment in the country.
To this future they have dedicated their present. They floated the Indian Television Academy and the ITA Awards. They created occasions for bringing the disparate sectors of the medium on one platform through their seminal seminars. And they have pioneered GR8! the first TV-glossy in the world. Eight long years have elapsed since they first held the TV-emblem aloft but their drive and dedication for the medium refuses to wane.
